STUDENT POPULATION
Students who enroll in this course should have already taken Civil War History , have an understanding of Abolitionism and be mature enough to handle the difficult discussion topics surrounding slavery, race and the quest for freedom. They should also be able to engage with others in respectful and tolerant discussion about such topics in online class discussion and collaborative projects. Students should have a basic working knowledge of the internet and connecting to given links. Following precise directions is a must. This course welcomes a diverse population of students from all over, who can provide a reference from a former Social Studies or History instructor attesting to their qualifications to enroll.
Because students will come from diverse backgrounds, it will be the expectation that patience with, and understanding toward, cultural differences and life experiences is expected, especially during discussion of sensitive issues. Because of the diversity of students, there is a diversity of learning activities as well which include the use of written, audio and video tools. For one activity, I even filmed directions in a 3 minute movie to bring greater clarity to the final project.
