About the Course
I chose to create a course combining two of my passions - teaching and quilting. The course title is Communication on the Underground Railroad. While this course is geared toward junior high learners, it can be easily adapted to middle or high school students based on the choice of activities and the depth with which you take them.
Form 3b: New Course Thoughts (adapted from Robin Smith's Conquering the Content (San Francisco: Jossey-Bass, 2008)
Brief description: What will this course be about? Where/how will it be taught? Who will be the learners? This course will be about the UGRR (Underground Railroad) and The Secret Role of Quilts. My hope is that it will be taught at ECot or Virtual Academy as part of their Language Arts program. Can also be adapted for Social Studies and even Math. The learners will be 7th or 8th graders, but again, can easily be adapted for middle school or high school learners based on activity choices.
Things that I want to accentuate in my course. This can be related to what or how you teach, how students respond, or about the technology. What do you want to see happen in this course?
-Want to accentuate UGRR’s role in freedom of slaves
-Want to explore alternate means of communication
-Want to explore maps, trails, reality of foot travel
-Want to do a project either map making or quilt block(s)
Problems that I’d like to avoid in my course. Based on past experience, what would you predict will drag you down?
It could be technology, disinterested students, lack of discussion, etc.
Information overload. Technology could be a stumbling block for me. While I am not totally uneducated on the computer, I am not a Techno whiz either. This sort of scares me., because I want to attempt some new things.
What might be the most problematic aspect of my course?
Video demonstration on quilting
The most time consuming aspect of my course will be:
Video Demonstration
